Harvesting Dollars from Saltland

The WA Node of CRC Salinity is meeting on Wednesday 25 October at CSIRO Floreat to view the ripening crop from CRC research projects. Come along and hear the latest progress on SGSL, raised beds, economics, salt-tolerant plants and much more, followed by feedback from extension representatives.

The day will be a great opportunity for networking with the Salinity Who’s Who in WA, concluding with a progress report on CRC extension activities and the rebid. Click here for a detailed program. We expect lively debate and plenty of opportunity for out of session discussion. Landmark staff and interested Landholders are particularly welcome to attend this event.

Replies for catering are needed by Friday 20 October, and should be directed to Greg Madson on (08) 6488 2505 or gmadson@fnas.uwa.edu.au.

For further information please contact Richard George on 0404 819 532 or Elizabeth Wheeler on (08) 6488 8553.

Lucerne Prospects Statement released

The CRC Salinity has recently completed a comprehensive review of the opportunities for integrating lucerne into farming systems in the Australia. This comes together in a major new publication titled Lucerne Prospects.

Author Dr Michael Robertson (CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems) has assessed the economic benefits of lucerne for eight distinct regions across temperate Australia.

This represents the outcome of many areas of research by the CRC, such as cultivar selection, agronomy, recharge management, farming systems, and farm economics. Much of this work has been strongly supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

The case for lucerne is supported by farmer case studies from across the eight regions.

KeithCompanions getting on well together

Profitable livestock enterprises increasingly exercise the minds of farmers, even those who a few years ago turned the shearing shed into a store room and the hay shed into a shelter for the bigger header.

This was the attraction of a forum at Keith presented by the CRC Salinity, Landmark and the SE NRM Board to present the results of research into the emerging opportunities for lucerne in farming systems and for profitable grazing from saline land. Read more...

A Million Hectares for the Future - Salinity Management Workshops

"A Million Hectares for the Future" is a series of workshops dealing with dryland salinity and key management options - for use by facilitators working with farmers and farmer groups. The workshops help landholders identify their salinity risk; acknowledge the potential consequences if the risk is not managed; and make informed decisions when determining the most suitable course of action to be taken.

Each workshop consists of:

  • Workshop Development Guide for Facilitators - includes how to set-up and run a workshop, suggested activities, background information and further reading relating to the workshop topic.
  • Workshop Manual for Participants - covers the topics discussed and slides presented throughout the workshop (including space to write notes), provides the participants with a record of the key messages, risk and management options.
  • Presentation material - PowerPoint slide sets that can be modified to suit individual groups.
  • Decision-making tools - includes STEP, flow trees, perennial gras chart, Leakage Calculator, Cost of Salinity Calculator and others.

The workshops can be viewed on the web in PDF format, but if you would like to run a workshop you should request a FREE CD that contains the workshop material in a format that can be edited to suit your needs. The CDs also contain additional tools such as a Cost of Salinity Calculator and decision trees, plus presentation material. Please contact the Department of Agriculture Western Australia, South Perth Head Office.
